If the product of two numbers is 10 and the sum of the two numbers is 7, then the larger of the numbers is

A    -2

B    2

C    4

D     5

Solution

Correct Answer: Option D

Let, larger number = x

and small number = y

So, xy=10 and, x+y=7--------(i)

We know, (x-y)2=(x+y)2 - 4xy

                       =(7)2 - 4×10

                       =49 - 40

                       =9

             so, x-y=3--------(ii)

Now, (i)+(ii)

2x=10

=> x=10/2

=> x=5

So, larger number = 5 (Ans.)
