In a class of 40 students, the number of students who passed the math exam is equal to half the number of students who passed the science exam. Each student in the class passed at least one of the two exams. If 5 students passed both exams, then how many students passed the math exam?

A    15

B    18

C    98

D    30

Solution

Correct Answer: Option A

Let the number of those passed in math be m

and those who passed in science be s.

Thus, m = s/2.

Now, m + s – 5 = 40.

Thus, s/2 + s -5 =40.

or, s = 30 and m = 15
