In a triangle the lengths of two sides are 5 and 9 and the length of the third side is represented by x. Which statement is always true?

A    x>5

B    x<9

C    5≤ x ≤ 9

D    4<x <14

Solution

Correct Answer: Option D

If we let the side with length 9 as the largest side of the triangle, then 5 + x must be greater than 9 to form a triangle.

Thus,  5 + x > 9

or, x > 9 - 5

or, x > 4

If we let x be the largest side.

Then, x must be less than 5 + 9

So, x < 14

Thus, by combining it, we get,

4<x <14
