Woman's age be x

and her son's age be y

Then, A/Q,

x=30y ................................................. (1)

18 years later,

Woman's age = x+18

her son's age= y+18

Now, A/Q,

x+18=3*(y+18)

or, x+18=3y+54

or, x-3y=54-18

or, x-3y= 36

or, 30y - 3y = 36 [From eq (1)]

or, 27y = 36

or, y = 36/27 = 12/9 = 4/3

So, y= 4/3

Then, x= 30*4/3 = 40 years
