In following question, two equations are given, you have to solve them and choose the correct option:

x2– 3x – 4 = 0,

y2 – 4 = 0

A x = y or relation cannot be determined

B x > y

C x < y

D x ≥ y

E x ≤ y

Solution

Correct Answer: Option A

x2 - 4x + x – 4 = 0

⇒         x (x-4) + 1(x-4) = 0

⇒         (x+1) (x-4) = 0

x = -1   ,  x = 4

 y2 – 4 = 0

 y2 = 4

 y = +2, -2

 (x=4) > y= (+2,-2)     ---- (i)

 x=(-1) < y = 2                        ---- (ii)

Hence, relation cannot be determined.
