In the following question, one or two equation(s) is/are given. You have to solve both the equations and find the relation between ‘x’ and ‘y’ and mark correct answer.

I. 4x2 – 7x – 2 = 0

II. 6y2 + 11y + 4 = 0

A x > y

B x ≥ y

C x < y

D x ≤ y

E x = y or the relation cannot be determined

Solution

Correct Answer: Option A

We will solve both the equations separately.

Equation I:

4x2 – 7x – 2 = 0

⇒ 4x2 – 8x + x – 2 = 0

⇒ 4x(x – 2) + 1(x – 2) = 0

⇒ (4x + 1) (x – 2) = 0

⇒ x = - 1/4 = - 0.25 or x = 2

Equation II:

6y2 + 11y + 4 = 0

⇒ 6y2 + 8y + 3y + 4 = 0

⇒ 3y (2y + 1) + 4(2y + 1) = 0

⇒ (3y + 4) (2y + 1) = 0

⇒ y = - 4/3 = - 1.33 or, y = - 1/2 = - 0.5

Comparing the values of x and y we get,

x > y
