A pillow is labeled at a price of Rs. 700 for sale. If one buys a pillow cover worth Rs. 100 along with it, the discount offered is 24% on total deal. John wanted to buy pillow only. So, John availed this deal and sold the pillow cover to Chris at Rs. 90. What is the effective discount that he availed on pillow?

A 34%

B 26%

C 28%

D 36%

E 33%

Solution

Correct Answer: Option B

Total marked price of pillow and pillow cover = Rs. 700 + Rs. 100 = Rs. 800

We know, Selling Price = Marked Price × (1 – (Discount Percentage/100))

⇒ Selling price after discount of 24% = Rs. 800 × (1 – 24/100) = Rs. 608

John availed this deal and sold the pillow cover to Chris at Rs. 90.

⇒ Effective selling price of pillow for John = Rs. 608 – Rs. 90 = Rs. 518

⇒ John bought pillow worth Rs. 700 at Rs. 518.

To find discount percentage,

518 = 700 × (1 – Discount Percentage/100)

⇒ Discount Percentage = 100 × (1 – 0.74) = 26

∴ Effective discount will be 26%.
