Direction: In the following question, a questions is followed by information given in three statements. You have to study the question along with the statements and decide, the information given in which of the statements (s) is necessary to answer the question.

What is the area of the square?

I. Measure of diagonal of the square is given.

II. Measure of one side of square is given.

III. Perimeter of the square is given.

A Only II

B Only III

C Only I and III

D Only II and III

E Any one of the three

Solution

Correct Answer: Option E

From statement 1:

If one diagonal of square is D units, then one side is D÷√2

⇒ Area = (D ÷√2)2 = (D2 ÷ 2) sq. units.

From statement 2:

If length of one side of a square = A units, then area = A2 sq. units.

From statement 3:

If perimeter of the square = P units, then length of one side of the square = P ÷4 units

⇒ Area = (P ÷4)2 = (P2 ÷ 16) sq. units.

∴ Any one of the three statements can be used to measure the area.
