A boatman takes twice as long to row a distance against the stream as to row the same distance with the stream. Find the ratio of speeds of the boat in still water and the stream.
Solution
Correct Answer: Option B
Let, speed of boat in still water = u
" " " stream = v
Given Condition,
Time taken against the stream = 2 × time taken with the stream
=> x/u-v = 2 × x/u+v [ same distance=x ,, Time =distance/speed ]
=> 1/u-v = 2/u+v => 2u - 2v = u + v => 2u-u = 2v + v
=> u =3v => u/v = 3
∴ u : v = 3 : 1
