In the following question, one or two equation(s) is/are given. You have to solve both the equations and find the relation between ‘x’ and ‘y’ and mark correct answer.

I. 12x2 + 11x + 12 = 10x2 + 22x

II. 13y2 – 18y + 3 = 9y2 – 10y

A x > y

B x ≥ y

C x< y

D x ≤ y

E x = y or the relation cannot be determined

Solution

Correct Answer: Option B

We will solve both the equations separately.

Equation I:

12x2 + 11x + 12 = 10x2 + 22x

⇒ 2x2 – 11x + 12 = 0

⇒ 2x2 – 8x – 3x + 12 = 0

⇒ (x – 4) (2x – 3) = 0

⇒ x = 4 or x = 3/2

Equation II:

13y2 – 18y + 3 = 9y2 – 10y

⇒ 4y2 – 8y + 3 = 0

⇒ 4y2 – 6y – 2y + 3 = 0

⇒ (2y – 3) (2y – 1) = 0

⇒ y = 3/2 or y = 1/2

Comparing the values of x and y we get,

x ≥ y
