A merchant purchased two qualities of tea at the rate of Rs. 250 per quintal and Rs. 290 per quintal. In 150 quintals of the second quality, how much tea of the first quality should be mixed so that by selling the resulting mixture at Rs. 350 per quintal, he gains a profit of 25%?

A 60 quintals

B 100 quintals

C 75 quintals

D 50 quintals

E 80 quintals

Solution

Correct Answer: Option D

Let x quintal tea of the first quality should be mixed with 150 quintals of second quality.

Total cost of x quintals first quality tea @ Rs.250/quintal = Rs. 250x

Total cost of 150 quintals second quality @ Rs. 290/quintal = Rs. (290 × 150) = Rs. 43500

Total cost of (150 + x) quintals mixture @ Rs. 350/quintal =Rs. 43500 + 250x

Selling price of the mixture at 25% profit is Rs. 350 per quintal.

So, Cost price of the mixture = Rs. (350×100)/125 = Rs. 280/quintal

Therefore,

43500 + 250x = 280 (150 + x)

⇒ 43500 + 250x = 42000 + 280x

⇒ 30x = 1500

⇒ x = 50

∴ 50 quintals of first quality tea should be mixed.
