A man buys bananas at Rs. 6 a dozen and an equal number at Rs. 9 a dozen. If he sells all the bananas at Rs. 4.50 a dozen and suffers a loss of Rs. 25, how many bananas did he buy?

A 60

B 50

C 100

D 80

E 25

Solution

Correct Answer: Option C

Let’s assume that the man bought x dozens of bananas at Rs. 6 a dozen and another x dozen of bananas at Rs. 9 a dozen.

∴ total quantity of bananas bought = 2x dozen

∴ cost price of bananas @ Rs. 6 a dozen = 6x

∴ cost price of bananas @ Rs. 9 a dozen = 9x

∴ total cost price of all bananas = 6x + 9x = 15x

Now, the bananas were sold at Rs. 4.50 a dozen

∴ Selling price of all bananas = 2x × 4.50 = 9x

Loss suffered is Rs. 25

∴ Loss = Cost price – Selling price

⇒ 25 = 15x – 9x = 6x

⇒ x = 25/6

Total number of bananas bought = 2x dozens = 2x × 12 = 2 × (25/6) × 12 = 100

∴ Number of bananas bought is 100
