At 8 am two trains started traveling towards each other from stations 300 Km apart. They passed each other at 12 noon. the same day. If the average speed of the faster train was 9 km more than that of the slower train, then what is the speed of the faster train in km/hr?

A 40

B 42

C 45

D None

Solution

Correct Answer: Option B

Let's call the speed of the slower train "x".
The speed of the faster train is x + 9 km/hr.

Travelling for 4 hours, the distance covered by the slower train is 4x km.
And the distance covered by the faster train is 4(x + 9) km.

They travelled 300km in 4 hours(i.e at 12noon), so we can simplify:
4x + 4(x + 9)=300
⇒ 4x + 4x + 36 = 300
⇒ 8x = 300-36
⇒ 8x= 264
∴ x = 264/8 = 33km/hr.

Then, the faster train is x+9 = 33+9 = 42 km/hr.
