In the mixture of 60 L the ratio of acid and water is 2 : 1 respectively. If the ratio of acid and water is to be 1 : 2, then the amount of water (in liters) to be added to the mixture is

A 75 L

B 60 L

C 50 L

D 45 L

E None of these

Solution

Correct Answer: Option B

Total quantity of the mixture = 60 L

∴ Quantity of acid in the mixture = 2/3 × 60 = 40 L

∴ Quantity of water in the mixture = 1/3 × 60 = 20 L

Let required quantity of water be x L.

According to the question,

\(\frac{{40}}{{20 + x}} = \frac{1}{2} \Rightarrow 80 = 20 + x\)

⇒ x = 60 L

Hence, the required quantity of the water to be added to the mixture is 60 L
