Passage : In the world Bank's ranking of the ease of doing business around the world, Bangladesh has dropped places due to stalled regulatory reform. Bangladesh's competitors such as India, Cambodia and Vietnam, have all improved in the overall ranking leaving Bangladesh below Yemen and Iraq. Bangladesh needs improvement in its regulator system, and a change in its ranking depends on the number of reforms implemented on the sub-indicators compared to all the other countries in the list. Every year, the World Bank's Doing Business Report provides an idea of how easy or difficult it is to start a small to medium sized business complying with significant regulations affecting ten areas in the life cycle of a business - starting a business getting construction permits electricity, registering property, getting credit, protecting minority investors, paying taxes, trading across borders, enforcing contracts, and resolving insolvency. In the past year, Bangladesh lost grades on five indicators while the other five remained unchanged. The country dropped the most in the index for starting a business, followed by credit index, and then in equal parts in registering property and protecting minority investors. While Bangladesh has improved on paying taxes due to the reduction in the corporate tax rate, the overall ranking dropped because the others did better. |
